A Special Project

Back in December I had the pleasure of working with Home of the Sparrow a wonderful organization that helps women and children in Chester County, PA. The project was to create a card illustration with a ‘Happy New Year from Home of the Sparrow’ message for all of their donors and supporters. They wanted an image that was both positive and forward looking and also strongly related to their mission : “To prevent homelessness by provide housing, education and support for women and children”

After a few sketches we settled on this final design depicting a community of strong and happy women who have been empowered to take control of their lives.

For the final design, I chose washy blue tones for the background to give an overall feeling of calm. I also felt that the brighter colours would pop nicely against it. The yellow was to bring in some warmth and a sense of optimism.

Background buildings were painted in black and colourized in Photoshop. I also added some sketchy outlines details on top!

I received copies of the card and postcard in the mail last week and was so happy with how they turned out! It was amazing to see the results of this rewarding project come to life. This year I hope to use my art towards more socially conscious and community minded projects like this one. No matter how small, it feels good to be part of such important work.

A little Holiday Cheer

I don’t make mixed drinks very often (more of a red wine or craft beer gal myself) but this one sounds so delish I may just have to imbibe a little over the holidays. The cocktail itself is more spicy with those maraschino cherry sweet bombs at the end. I love painting cocktails so creating this illustrated drink recipe was great fun (complete with a slightly tipsy Santa…..yikes!!).

You can find this as well as tons of other awesomely illustrated recipes from artists around the world on They Draw and Cook Happy Holidays!!

Ohhhh Canada!!

I'm super excited to share this project that I worked on with HomeSense to celebrate Canada's 151st birthday!  We're feeling more patriotic than ever these days so what better way to show some homegrown love then to add some Canadiana themed products to your summer decor! I created 5 different watercolor illustrations based on iconic Canadian food (and drink) that were used on melamine plates and tea towel sets.

While the origins of the ketchup chip are uncertain, Canadian's are definitely the biggest consumer of the red chip.

It's so cool to see my Noodle Bowl illustration in the current issue of National Geographic Traveler Netherlands! I wish I was able to read Dutch as this is a tasty article about Ramen culture in Japan.

Raspberry Lemony Lime Popsicles Recipe Illustration

I'm super excited that my new recipe illustration was featured in They Draw and Cook's "Refreshing" collection this week!  I'm trying to build up my recipe collection and food illustrations on TDAC (this is my third one so far) and for this one,  I wanted to focus the design around some fun hand-lettering. I created this with brushes & a nib pen using Windsor and Newton inks.  I've been really enjoying using these inks lately as they interact in weird & wonderful ways with water. The raspberry clouds in the popsicles were a happy result of this!
